Oil, egg tempera, gold leaf on linen. 53”W x 48”H, 2019 The Blue Martyr (a yearling deer) I found in the willows along the edge of the Van Duzen River. While studying it I had the vision that it represented all of Nature. And Nature was/is the antidote and deterrent to the onslaught of the flood of technology bombarding humanity.

While on retreat at the Morris Graves Foundation, The Lake; I was seated in the spot where I had previously seen Morris Graves sit. I was marveling at the beauty of The Lake and focused on the closest island when an Egret landed in the top of the island’s stunted tree. I immediately felt the goose bumps and knew it was Morris making himself seen. It was an unforgettable sight.

Oil, egg tempera on linen. 48”H x 40”W, 2016. There is a spot just before Grizzly Creek State Park, on highway 36, where a change in the weather occurs. We call it the Gateway. In this painting the Guardians are overseeing the Gateway while the cairn Guardian beams energy up stream.

Oil, egg tempera, silver leaf and handmade gesso on rag paper. Two paintings representing the same island at The Lake, Morris Graves Foundation, Loleta, CA. It has been said that The Lake was formed by a huge earthquake hundreds of years ago. The ground sunk and The Lake was formed with redwoods tops pokeing up to the waters surface. These tops became the islands in The Lake. One island’s leafless tree is white with ferns around its base the other is red showing the submerged trunk of the sunken redwood. There are silver triangles representing the wake of swimming ducks and the Japanese symbol for tsunami at the bottom.
