Two paintings on a hinged folding panel. These paintings represent the same island at The Lake, Morris Graves Foundation, Loleta, CA. It has been said that The Lake was formed by a huge earthquake hundreds of years ago. This is known because the tsunami created by the earthquake was recorded in Japan. The ground sunk and The Lake was formed with the tops of the redwoods pokeing up to the waters surface. These tree tops became islands in The Lake. In one painting the island’s leafless tree is white with ferns around its base. While exploring 6 Rivers Nation Forest after a forest fire we came upon a small toasted fir tree. Next to it stood a mauve colored manzanita shrub. Behind them the blackened tree trunks. The colors were fantastic! I thought it so remarkable that in all this destruction there was this joyous beauty. I was marveling at the beauty of The Lake and focused on the closest island when an Egret landed in the top of the island’s stunted tree. I immediately felt the goose bumps and knew it was Morris making himself seen. Two paintings on a hinged folding panel. These paintings represent the same island at The Lake, Morris Graves Foundation, Loleta, CA. It has been said that The Lake was formed by a huge earthquake hundreds of years ago. This is known because the tsunami created by the earthquake was recorded in Japan. The ground sunk and The Lake was formed with the tops of the redwoods pokeing up to the waters surface. These tree tops became islands in The Lake. In one painting the island’s leafless tree is white with ferns around its base. While exploring 6 Rivers Nation Forest after a forest fire we came upon a small toasted fir tree. Next to it stood a mauve colored manzanita shrub. Behind them the blackened tree trunks. The colors were fantastic! I thought it so remarkable that in all this destruction there was this joyous beauty.
